It’s a wonderful time to be a rap star – thanks to a new
wave of technology, celebrity endorsements and more, the geniuses of hip hop
are close to world domination. But while some of us may think of big names such
as Jay Z and Dr Dre, there is talent to be found in all corners of the world –
including in South Africa.
The region may not be the first place that springs to mind
when it comes to hip hop – indeed, South Africa is better known for its online
entertainment offering with sites like Springbok Casino offering games like
5-reel slots. However, lurking in underground recording studios are stars like
Die Antwoord, who have risen to prominence since working with Neill Blomkamp on
his new movie, Chappie. But who else does South Africa have to offer the hip
hop scene?
Khuli Chana
Originally a member of rap group Morafe, Khuli Chana likes
to incorporate native South African language into his rapping, including
Setswana and Motswako. He has since gone solo, producing his own album,
Motswakoriginator.
Ifani
Using a unique blend of rap and comedy, Ifani has made his
way into the hearts of even the most cynical hip hop fans. A campaign in March
2015 called First Day Gold saw the young star selling 20,000 copies of his
single in one day – silencing his critics.
Morale
Another one to branch off from a group, Morale started his
rapping career with the Glitz Gang. Since then, he has gone on to launch his
own brands, even bagging himself the Metro FM award.
Kwesta
Youngster Kwesta was born in Johannesburg and carved a niche
for himself on the hip hop scene after winning ‘MC of the month’ in a rap
competition for Yfm. He has since gone on to win many other hip hop-related
awards.
HHP
Awards are something that rapper HHP knows only too much
about – since splitting from group Verbal Assassins, the Setswana-rapping
superstar has released seven albums and taken home an incredible 11 awards.
Blaklez
With a voice as raspy as Louis Armstrong’s, Blaklez has
developed his own distinctive sound as a rapper. Known as one half of “The
Anvils,” he released his own mix tape in 2011 and his career has been on the up
ever since.
Pro
Better known by some as Lind Mkhze, Pro, or Prokid as he is
also known, Pro is not only a successful rapper but also a businessman. Apart
from winning Hype Awards, he also owns Danki San, which has been endorsed by
Fish Eagle.
Kid X
Known for his snappy looks and no-nonsense style, Kid X has
made a name for himself after collaborating with many big name stars. While he
produces his own music, he’s also got a keen eye for scouting new talent.
AKA Jealousy
The recipient of the KORA Award, 2015, AKA Jealousy’s rap
career started out with the group Entity. While his group of school friends was
not successful, since going solo, he’s certainly given his peers reason to be
jealous.
Die Antwoord
Arguably the most successful act on this list, Die Antwoord
rose to fame in 2008 and their star isn’t showing any signs of fading. After
signing with Interscope Records, they have since pursued a number of lucrative
projects, including the aforementioned work with Neill Blomkamp and founding
their own record label.
